Electrical Engineering Services

Armed to Deliver Electrical Confidence

Electrical power systems are the lifeline of our energy infrastructure, delivering electricity to businesses and communities, and powering our everyday lives. As demand for electricity increases, so does the need for reliable, efficient and safe power systems. As an electrical engineering and technical services firm, Enkompass provides key electrical infrastructure services to ensure that electricity is distributed from producer to consumer.

Electrical Assessment Studies

Enkompass engineers will review grounding, emergency back up, electrical configuration, and help our clients with recommendations on increasing reliability and modernization within their facility.

Arc Flash Analysis

Arc flashes can occur in any electrical device, regardless of voltage. These potentially hazardous arc flashes can cause explosive bursts of heat and light, damaging surrounding power systems and causing personal injury.

In order to protect electrical workers and ensure compliance, arc flash hazard studies must be completed to determine the caution boundary around electrical equipment where workers may receive second or higher degree burns if not adequately protected. Our analysis will determine the incident energy level at a specific working distance from equipment, and provides recommendations for the required category of the personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn when working within the arc flash protection boundary.

Coordination Analysis

Electrical systems utilize protective devices such as circuit breakers and fuses to protect key electrical equipment within the power system. When a short circuit occurs, protective device coordination can minimize the impact of failures and prevent the shutdown of entire power facilities. A protective device coordination analysis studies the impacts of short circuits and equipment failures within power facilities and determines their effects on operations. As part of our analysis, we check for compliance with the latest requirements of the Canadian electrical code, summarizing potential weaknesses, and listing practical recommendations to improve electrical deficiencies.

Ground Grid Analysis

Ground grid studies are used to determine the requirements for a safe ground grid for commercial facilities, industrial sites, and substations. This is done by calculating ground potential rise, step, and touch voltage as well as the overall ground grid resistance based on IEEE Standard 80.

Load Flow Analysis

A load flow analysis is performed during the planning and design stages of a power system or when evaluating changes to an existing system. Load flow studies determine if system voltages remain within specified limits under normal or emergency operating conditions, and whether equipment such as transformers and conductors are overloaded.

Harmonic Analysis and Power Factor Correction Studies

Harmonic analysis is used to identify harmonic problems and potential violations of distortion limits based on IEEE Standard 519.  Harmonic mitigation and power factor correction recommendations are made to ensure equipment operates as intended without nuisance tripping of protective devices and other problems associated with harmonics and a low power factor.

Motor Starting Studies

Motor starting studies evaluate the effect on system voltage when motors are started by various types of starters and in various facility operating modes to ensure that worst-case situations have been accounted for in the system design.

Short Circuit Analysis

A Short Circuit Analysis and Protective Device Adequacy Evaluation is performed to determine the adequacy of your interrupting electrical devices (such as circuit breakers) to interrupt and/or withstand the most severe fault duty.
